NO!

I just learned that CBS doesn't stream Criminal Minds on the web... FFFFFFFUUUUUU!

My world just collapsed a little bit :'( I need to find an emergency solution FAST!

Current mood:

It's winter!

No. No it's not. I've actually managed to get lightly sunburned on my face! In late September! Awesome. Just... awesome. (This is not sarcasm. This is real joy. Honest. Getting a tan/sunburn in late September = Epic)

We've gotten more or less adjusted to the place now. We've finally managed to buy some food to store in the fridge! *joy* But the essentials hasn't been bought yet... A 47" flat screen TV. But believe me, it's gonna happen. I'm not gonna watch TV on an old TV the next 8-9 months. We just need a car to get it home first.

We've actually been looking around on the internet for cars, but figured we have to go to a dealership so we can browse them and maybe take some of them on a test drive. The other day when we were finished eating dinner, I figured it would be a good idea to go car browsing the day after since we didn't have anything to to until 1245 PM.

Cut to scene:

Me:                            Guys, you know... we have lots of free time tomorrow before 1245. So why don't we...
Both roomies:       Work out!
Me:                             That's not what.... I meant we could... *sigh*

Yeah... I ended up working out instead.. FML. But tomorrow! Tomorrow we'll go carshopping! Hopefully.

Some of the guys have already bought a car! It's a 1983 model, but OMG! The seats are from heaven! Seriously! It's better than the good old Santana (RIP)! Now, what do we do when someone buys a car? Why, drive to the liquor store to buy some alcohol to celebrate! Which is what we did. Yes, the liquor store was only about 700 meters away, but that's besides the point...

And what did I find in the liquor store? I'll show you!

Woodchuck! You know, "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" *crickets*
Aw, come on people! Nobody heard of this? Be a geek, play Monkey Island! Geez! You're making me embarrassed!

In other news, I had my first dilemma today. Criminal Minds and Modern Family was on TV at the same time! WHY?!?! It's so hard to choose! But I do believe I did the right thing. Went to a party instead ^^. Why you ask? Because the place we went to was criminally cheap. We paid 10 USD to get in, and then all the drinks were for free! It was an all you can drink buffet! <3 <3 <3. Sure, the drinks weren't all that, and probably low on alcohol, because I could still stand up after 10 drinks. But free is free!

But what about the TV-shows I missed, you say? Why, watch them online on the network home pages! :D I want an american IP-address for life. It makes my life worth screaming like a little girl.

Oh! Before I go to bed, (it's 0330 AM and I'm kind of drunk) I need to shout out to the campus ID-card office. Thanks for making me photogenic. I actually look tan! And attractive! *Tear of Joy*

It's time for another song of the day! Now, most of these songs are on my spotify playlist, so I guess most of you have already heard them. Because you do check up on my playlists daily, right? It is super-important that you do. Since it's MY playlist and not some mediocre person. But behold! This one is not on my playlist.

Song of the day: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home

Flytrippin' (See what I did there? ^^)

WARNING! This entry contains long rants about the trip. You have been warned.

Aaaand I’ve arrived at my home residence for the next 9 months! I got up at 6 AM in the morning and arrived 0330 AM. And that’s without sleeping too! (Plus, oh, only about 3 hours sleep the night before?) And to tell you the truth, I don’t really feel that sleepy yet, but I know my body is. Cuz it won’t stop swinging back and forth when I’m standing still. It’s like I feel the world moving.
I can’t really say that the trip was smooth all the way. The first problem we encountered was already at Gardermoen, where we were told to check in at the self-check-in terminals. Even though we were told the day before that we should check in as a group at a counter. Okay, we can do that,
we innocently thought, but NO! Please advise… self-check-in is a nightmare when traveling in a group. At least it was for us. I don’t think any of us actually got through and got a ticket, so we went over to the counter again to tell them about the problem. But aha! The guy behind the counter told us we had to pay for the extra luggage, even though that had been pre-paid by Avinor. WTF?

So. After a lot of bickering, we were sent to another counter to figure it out. Because we were clogging up the check-in queue. And after A LOT of bickering and phone calls there, we learned that we had been misinformed. No one had paid for the extra luggage. So we had to pay for it ourselves.
*groan*. After that was done, it was easy-peasy to check in at the counter.

And it was easy-peasy to fly to Amsterdam, where the flight to the US (more exactly Minneapolis) was. Got to walk through one of those x-ray machines that scans the body ^^ Not the same as I’ve seen on TV, but I got to see myself. And it seems I have a dark spot where my bellybutton is… Maybe I should check that out…

But then we encountered a problem again since half of the group hadn’t gotten the boarding card for the last flight to Fargo, even though the baggage was checked all the way to Fargo. We did ask a random KLM employee at Gardermoen about this, and he said it was normal, and that we probably didn't need them. WRONG! Btw, I was one of the lucky persons who didn't get it. So we ended up almost not getting on the last plane. But the employees at the gate were very cooperative. And one of them stole my heart with her comic timing and sarcasm. You’re kind to make us laugh after traveling for about 17 hours =)

Cut to scene:

The employee was talking on the phone, trying to fix our problem, but had to give the phone to her coworker since she probably didn't know the answer to a question.

Employee:     Please hold while I transfer your call
Employee:    *Hands phone to coworker who’s standing right next to her*

Actually, that didn't look as good on text as it did in real life. But believe me, she was funny. We did eventually get on the plane, which was extremely lucky since it had been overbooked!

The last piece de resistance of the trip was the bus from Fargo to Grand Forks. The bus driver managed to get lost on campus while he was trying to find our apartments :D But as luck would have it, we eventually got there! And I didn't lose any luggage!

Truth be told, even though we hit a few speed bumps here and there, it was a nice trip. I wasn’t exhausted, and my mood has been great all the way! And the others have been in a good mood too I think.
BTW, you know what? I knew it's flat over here, but it's really flat! F.L.A.T. It looks like this: ___________ So flat. It's ridiculous.

Now… I do remember a certain family member, who gave birth to me almost 25 years ago, say that I didn't have to pack any summer clothes. Do you want to know the temperature here? Do you? Because it will show you were wrong. At least for this week ^^ It’s around 25 degrees at day :D It’s the summer I never had! And it’s gonna last all week apparently. I guess those pirate pants and shorts came in handy after all. Huh.

So after being awake and traveling the last 20 hours, what did I do when I got to the apartment? Why, turn on the TV to watch CASTLE! *squee*
BTW, the TV is old and we’re already planning on buying a big one for 700 USD ^^ Plus a soundsystem! Yes, twin sister, other people than me are nazi when it comes to sound! haHA! Ahahah! It seems it is you who are weird. And not the other way around. At least not in this department.

That's it for now.. I'll update you guys with pictures and other stuff some other day. Sleep tight!

PS: Since my ego was boosted to new heights the other day, I've decided to share some songs now and then just because I can. And because, face it, my music rocks!

For you weirdos without Spotify, you can always use Youtube to hear it

Sayonara Norway!

So I'm halfway on my journey! No, I'm not.. I'm at Gardermoen. I still have 15-17 hours of traveling left... *groan*. But so far, so good. My open invitation worked like a charm! After counting people on my camera, I counted 17 peeps who came to say goodbye! Plus a shy little guy who didn't join the photoshoot. Way to go people! My ego was boosted to new heights!

My family possé

My volda possé! (Ignore the whole stomping me. It's... a show of affection... Geez! Could they smile more while stomping me?!?!)

Riddance means have a nice trip, right? No? Frak... It's still going up on my wall in the US though. Awesomeness on paper!

Did I tell you that Avinor spoils us? I didn't? Well, you must have figured out. Free food, free lodging, good times. It's all good ^^ And they've fixed almost everything for us over in the US! All we had to do was pack our bags and show up! More or less. And they haven't stopped spoiling us yet! I am currently in a hotel which opened only a few weeks ago! There's a good chance no-one's ever lived in my hotel room! Niceness.

Picture of the niceness

I actually almost walked away from the check in a restaurant because I'm so used to free food ^^
...actually, I DID walk away from the check! But that was only because another classmate paid for my food by mistake =D He'll get it back in dollars... When the currency is extra low.

So! Tomorrow is the day. Estimated time of departure is 1020 norwegian time. Arrival in Grand Forks? Oooh.. about 0200 or 0300 norwegian time. No problem! I bet I'm gonna smell as fresh then as I'll do tomorrow after my shower.

PS: Thanks for showing up at the airport everybody. You really make my life into an amazing experience no matter what!

PPS: And Bergen/Oslo chick! It's soooo cool that you were actually thinking about flying up just to say goodbye! It would be even cooler, cuz then you could share the flight with me halfway back!

September 24, 2010

The beginning is nigh

But my packing isn't anywhere near done. Actually, I haven't begun! Which makes my mom stressed. I've found the mathematical formula to this problem; The more carefree/relaxed I am about packing, the more stressed she is! So I've been sent to my room to figure out what I want to take with me, and that is why I'm writing this entry as we speak. It's a good way to ignore the mess that is my room. And my brother's. Apparently, I have so much stuff I have to fill 2 rooms with just clothes and random electronic toys.

Had a nice little chat with said mum earlier, and she said straight out that she's gonna cry when I leave. Aaaaw =). Which prompted me to ask the obvious question...

Cut to scene:

Me:             Did you cry when my big sister went to Canada to get the same education?
Mom:          ...no
Me:             Hah! You love me more!

I do recall her saying something else after that, but to be honest, I ignored it. It's called narcissism. And perhaps denial.

Also, my dad gave me the finger of love. Yes, it was the middle finger, and some people may call it something else, but I like to make up my own stuff. I got it probably because he thought I was so good at pointing out the weird position of a window in the new garage. It has the wonderful view of... a wall... 5 feet away.

Cut to another scene:

Me:           Wow. That window is very helpful.
Dad:          What? You need it for the view... err.. so you can get light...
Dad:         *Finger of Love*

In other news, I realized that it's autumn, and around these times there's a bucketload of shows with season premieres! And by shows I mean AMERICAN shows. On AMERICAN tv. Which means I'll be able to watch them on tv in North Dakota :D At least I hope so. If it turns out that we won't have a decent channel out of the 67 (!!!) we get, I'm gonna cry. There's a very limited time of how long I'm able to watch bible channels.

Ugh.. I'm running low on things to say, which means I probably have to dive into the pile of clothes on my brother's floor. But before I log off and groan before doing some tedious packing,

OPEN INVITATION!

Sunday September 26th, at 1700 hours at Hovden airport. Be there or be square. (I've never really understood that phrase.. insight anyone?)
To say goodbye to meee! I need my ego stroked one last time before I leave.

Pre-course, week 2

I was too tired to write in the last entry, with good reason! I did get to the top eventually though ^^ Even though I was the last one. Note to self: Don't get drunk the night before a hike. It kinda sucks.

But now is the time for me to tell my minions what I've been up to the last days here at Ørlandet!

There's one thing I should say first... WHY DIDN'T I BRING MY CAMERA?!?! Seriously! And while I'm at it, WHY DON'T I HAVE A PROPER VIDEOCAMERA?!?!?! My mobile phone isn't cut out to manage all the awesomeness I've experienced the last few days. So this has given me an agenda for what to do when I get to North Dakota:

  1. Get a car
  2. Get a drivers licence
  3. Drive to the nearest electronics shop
  4. Buy a fucking video camera
  5. While I'm there, buy some equipment for the mirror reflex camera as well
  6. And maybe an iPod
  7. A TV would probably be nice too

Hmm? Oh! Yes! What I've been up to... This place can make a grown up person (I am! At least on paper) into a little child.

See what I mean? It was AWESOME! Only wish they could take me for a spin too... Oh, well. We also got to see one of the Sea King helicopters up close, and later on they took a few low passes past the tower where we were standing ^^

When did I become this geeky? Jeez!

Another thing, the NATO AWACS plane was coincidentally here too, so we got the full tour inside the plane ^^ Sadly, we didn't get to take pictures inside of it, but here it is on the runway the day after.

It's got one of those radar thingies on top! Cool as hell. We actually got to stand close to the runway and watch it take off before we went on to visit the fire station at the airport. Huh... As I'm writing this, I'm getting a feeling I'm writing about a kindergarten school on a field trip to the local airport. But then again, I think that's about how I acted.

We also got to visit the meteorological office at Ørlandet, but as the guy who was telling us what they were doing I zoned out when I found this little beauty.

We got to hit the town last night too. Where I dissed a guy at the bar for drinking water. Boy was I wrong! In my defense, "Fjellbekk" is water where I come from. Learned myself a new drink, though.

Oh, and in case you're wondering about some of the acronyms (ref. entry number 2) I use, (yes, I'm pointing at you, first-born sibling) try a little webpage called urbandictionary. For instance; FML, FU and somewhere in the future, HBIC

Field trip!

One word.

UNIFORMS! They're everywhere! *grin*

I'm currently stationed at Ørlandet military base. Only been here 24 hours, but I'm loving it :D Got to see a few F16's and NATO's AWACS planes at the airport too! And I thought we had excellent rooms at Røyken but, sadly, I was wrong. Here we have refrigerators in our rooms! And a couch and some chairs too to go with the bigger television. Only bad part, is the internet. Very unstable. Yes, I'm currently sitting at the end of the hallway to write this shit. It probably looks weird and idiotic, but I'll do it for the minions! Of which I have 2! (And a secret one who's an anonymous wuss. Hint, she looks like me)

By the way, yes, the refrigerator is filled up with the essentials already since it only takes 10-15 mins to walk to the supermarket.

Sorry about the quality... I guess buying a mobile phone for 6000,- doesn't give you everything. Figure that! Yes mom, it cost that much. I may have led you to believe it was cheaper...

Cut to scene:

Some snarky idiot:           “Blahblahblah… expensive cellphone… Blahblah… 5000,-“
Mom:                                 “WHAT? Liv-Marit! Did you buy a cellphone for 5000,-?!?!”
Me:                                     “No! Honest!”
Mom:                                 “Oh. Okay”

I didn't lie!

Oh. And I took a picture of the room as well.

TADA! Luxury ^^

Anywho... I'm running low on batteries, so I have to stop the transmission for now...

Pre-course, week 1

So, yeah. I’m well into my first week of ATC 101 (that’s Air Traffic Control for you people who don’t care much for acronyms in the ATS-universe. By the way, ATS means Air Traffic Service. And acronym is the initial letters of the words in a phrase. I know you probably know/would have guessed it, but I like acting like a know-it-all. Boosts my EGO. Ok. Ok. I should get back to the blog).

It’s held at Røyken ATCC (I’ll give you a list over the acronyms at the end, ok?) where my big sister used to work! Figure that. And people still remember her too. Aaaaw… So there’s been a few certain amount of “You have to be Rigmors sister”. Who? Me? Living in a shadow? No… I just look like her, picked the same vocation as her and hang out at her old workplace. It’s… yeah… never mind.

The funny thing is that since I’m already in the ATS-family as an AFIS-officer people probably have slightly higher expectations of me. And I have even higher expectations of me, at least in the beginning, which is nice, cuz it makes me motivated to study. Not that this pre-course is heavy or anything. It’s pretty light. You’re just supposed to get a feeling of what you’re getting into. What’s expected of you as an air traffic controller. But I kinda got my confidence hurt today when one of the instructors were showing pictures of airplanes and we had to guess what airplane it was. Suddenly when nobody knew the answer to one of the plane, I knew it!

Cut to scene:

Me, smiling knowingly and confident.

Instructor:          “Ah! The AFIS-officer obviously knows the answer.”
Me:                      “That’s a Dash 8!”
Instructor:          “Correct! Do you know if it’s the 100 or 300 series?”

Duh! I’ve only been looking at them the last 3.5 years of my life!

Me:                      “The 100-series me thinks.”
Instructor:          “No. It’s the 300.”

*Facepalm* In my defence, which is really not that great, the picture had a weird angle. And I’m sticking to it. Plus, if I had seen it in real life I’m confident very fairly certain I would know the difference.  But other than that small incident, I’m doing pretty well.

Also, we got to visit the American Embassy in Oslo the other day! Wow. It's like a Norwegian high-risk prison! And the people you had to talk to in there about the visa sat behind bulletproof windows (I'm not really sure if it was bulletproof, but it's more fun that way. Or intimidating). As luck would have it, I looked innocent enough and got myself a visa! Yey!

In other related news, the quarters are excellent, the food is excellent, the people are excellent and the course is excellent. I'm having a good time =). On Monday we'll be leaving for Ørlandet, which is a military airport outside of Trondheim, where we will spend our second week of the pre-course.

Explanations (also known as acronyms in ATS for dummies):
ATC                      Air Traffic Control
ATS                       Air Traffic Service
ATCC                    Air Traffic Control Centre
AFIS                      Aerodrome Flight Information Service

Consider yourself slightly educated in the thrilling world known as AVIATION!

September 5, 2010

This is it!

Aaaaand finally I've gotten a blog after loads of requests to start one (from 2 people!! It still counts even though I'm related to them...). So this will be where I tell you guys about my big adventure in a far away and exotic place called Grand Forks. In North Dakota. In the US of A.

But first on the agenda! Yes, I'm gonna write in English. Because it's fun, I get to practice in this exotic language and because my grammar sucks when it comes to nynorsk. And I know a certain sister is gonna tell me all about my errors if I do. And by the way, certain sister, I know ‘gonna’ is wrong too. Just deal with it. You’re not an expert just because you didn’t “iron your English test” (your words). And bokmål is just… wrong considering my dialect. So wrong.

Anywho. Since I haven’t actually left my home country yet, and I haven’t begun the pre-course spanning over 2 weeks, I don’t have any pictures to show. Not any pictures of relevance… But there’s always the pics I tried to take of the cozy starry night in my hometown the other night.

Of course, the camera managed to find 3 trillion more stars than I could see with my own eye, so it just ended up looking geeky instead of beautiful. But then again, I’m a geek, so I liked it.

And no, this is not off-topic if I haven’t even begun my adventure I’m supposed to blog about. So there.
